Everything You Need to Know About Prediabetes: Understanding Risks and Prevention

Have you heard of prediabetes? This intermediate stage between normal health and type 2 diabetes may seem harmless, but it’s an important warning sign from the body about potential future complications. Knowing its causes, symptoms, and prevention methods is essential for maintaining quality of life and preventing the condition from progressing to chronic diabetes.

What is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes occurs when the body begins to lose the ability to properly metabolize glucose, leading to blood sugar levels that are higher than normal but not yet in the range of type 2 diabetes. This indicates a higher risk of developing the disease, and without timely treatment, it may progress to an irreversible state.

Diabetes generally occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin or when insulin does not work effectively. Insulin is the hormone responsible for controlling blood glucose levels, allowing cells to use it as an energy source. When this doesn’t happen, sugar remains in the bloodstream, causing hyperglycemia—the main characteristic of diabetes.

In the case of prediabetes, the body starts to show changes in carbohydrate metabolism, raising blood glucose to levels that exceed healthy standards, though not yet reaching diabetic levels. This condition should be seen as a warning sign, as it also increases the risk of heart complications.

The positive side is that prediabetes can be reversed with lifestyle changes. However, if undiagnosed and untreated, prediabetes can progress to type 2 diabetes, a chronic condition that, while manageable, cannot be cured.

When Does Prediabetes Manifest?

Prediabetes generally manifests when the body fails to properly metabolize glucose, leading to its buildup in the blood. In numerical terms, a normal fasting glucose level ranges between 70 mg/dl and 100 mg/dl. When someone has fasting glucose levels between 100 mg/dl and 125 mg/dl, they are classified as prediabetic. Levels above 126 mg/dl indicate diabetes.

This transition is gradual, occurring over a few years, and is directly related to lifestyle habits. Over time, without interventions, the condition can progress and lead to more serious health complications.

Main Causes of Prediabetes

Prediabetes is a multifactorial condition, meaning various factors can contribute to its development. Key factors include:

  • Family History and Genetics: If there are cases of diabetes in the family, the predisposition is higher.
  • Weight Gain: Increased weight burdens the pancreas, which has to produce more insulin to manage blood sugar.
  • High-Calorie Diet: Diets rich in sugar and processed foods can contribute to elevated glucose levels.
  • Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity impedes the body’s use of glucose, making it easier for it to accumulate in the blood.

One of the main risk factors is weight gain. As body weight increases, the pancreas tries to compensate by producing more insulin. However, the body may not respond well to this increase, leading to insulin resistance—a condition where insulin is present but doesn’t act effectively in glucose control.

Symptoms of Prediabetes

One of the greatest challenges with prediabetes is that it often doesn’t show obvious symptoms. As a silent condition, many people only discover it through routine tests, like fasting glucose measurement. However, in rare cases, skin darkening in areas like the armpits, neck, and groin—known as acanthosis—may occur.

Because of this, people over 45 are recommended to have regular glucose testing. Those with risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, a family history of type 2 diabetes, or others should also monitor their glucose levels regularly, even before this age.

When Does Prediabetes Progress to Diabetes?

Prediabetes progresses to diabetes when blood glucose levels reach or exceed 126 mg/dl. This process can take between three and ten years, depending on lifestyle habits. In some cases, significant dietary changes and increased physical activity can delay or even reverse this progression.

If prediabetes is diagnosed in time, it’s possible to normalize glucose levels and prevent the progression to chronic diabetes. However, once the condition sets in, there is no cure. Diabetes management involves medication and, in some cases, daily insulin injections.

Prediabetes Treatment

Treating prediabetes mainly involves lifestyle and dietary changes. The recommendation is to reduce the intake of foods high in sugars and saturated fats and to adopt a more balanced diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

Regular physical exercise is also a powerful tool in glucose management, as muscles use blood sugar for energy when they’re worked. These changes, combined with medical monitoring, can help reverse prediabetes and prevent its progression.

Maintaining these practices in the long term is essential for keeping glucose levels within the normal range, ensuring a healthier, higher-quality life.
